Wool-Blend Yarn & Mid-Gauge Development

Wool and wool-blend yarns can be developed according to the required warmth, garment weight, hand feel, drape and surface appearance.

This turtleneck sweater can be developed in 7GG or 9GG mid-gauge jersey knitting. The final garment thickness and thermal characteristics depend on the relationship between fiber composition, yarn count, yarn thickness, knitting gauge, stitch density and finishing.

A 7GG or 9GG construction should therefore not automatically be defined as lightweight or heavyweight. Yarn and knit specifications should be evaluated together according to the buyer’s target garment.

Turtleneck Height & Rib Development

The high-neck construction can be adjusted according to the required silhouette, coverage and folding style.

Development options include:

  • Turtleneck height
  • Collar circumference
  • Single or folded collar proportions
  • Collar rib width and density
  • Body and sleeve measurements
  • Shoulder width
  • Cuff and bottom rib dimensions
  • Yarn composition and yarn count
  • 7GG or 9GG construction
  • Stitch density
  • Custom yarn colors
  • Size grading
  • Main labels and care labels
  • Hangtags and packaging

Collar dimensions should be developed together with yarn properties and rib tension because these factors influence stretch, recovery and how the turtleneck sits around the neck.

Why Turtleneck Recovery Matters in Wool Knitwear

A knitted turtleneck needs sufficient stretch to pass comfortably over the head while also recovering to the intended neck shape after dressing.

The result depends on the relationship between yarn elasticity, rib structure, collar circumference, stitch density and finishing. If the collar construction is too tight, dressing comfort can be affected; if recovery is insufficient, the neckline may become loose or lose its intended shape.

Wool and wool-blend yarns can also respond differently depending on fiber composition and yarn construction. For this reason, collar dimensions should not be determined independently from the selected yarn and knit structure.

During sampling, the turtleneck should be evaluated for opening stretch, recovery, collar height, folding appearance and comfort before bulk specifications are confirmed.

Fit, Rib & Color Customization

Chest width, shoulder measurements, body length and sleeve dimensions can be adjusted according to the buyer’s tech pack or target size chart.

The ribbed cuffs and bottom hem can also be customized through rib dimensions and stitch density. Their tension should be coordinated with the main jersey-knit body to achieve the intended silhouette without excessive pulling.

White, black, camel, light gray and dark gray can be used as reference colors, while additional colors can be developed according to available yarn cards and project requirements.

Private-label options can include custom woven labels, care labels, hangtags and packaging.

Sampling & Quality Control

A development sample is recommended before bulk production to confirm:

  • Yarn and color
  • 7GG or 9GG gauge
  • Garment measurements and fit
  • Turtleneck height and circumference
  • Collar stretch and recovery
  • Cuff and bottom rib dimensions
  • Labels and packaging

Quality control is based on the approved sample and buyer specifications. Inspection points can include garment measurements, knit consistency, collar dimensions, neckline symmetry, rib appearance, linking and seams, finishing and branding details.
